Caries Management By Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) is leading a paradigm shift in the treatment of cavities away from drill-and-fill dentistry, to focus treatment on the underlying bacterial causes of cavities. CAMBRA is a comprehensive system to assess and manage the underlying pathological factors of caries disease. Based on the assessed caries risk, treatment options employ risk reduction strategies alongside interventions to promote remineralization.

Dr. John Featherstone

Dr. John Featherstone is Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Distinguished Professor of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences.  He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wellington (New Zealand).  His research over the past 40 years has covered several aspects of cariology (study of tooth decay), and was a pioneer in research on laser interactions with hard tissues. He is currently active in implementing caries management by risk assessment in several dental schools across the world. He has received numerous National and International awards, including the Norton Ross Award for excellence in clinical research from the American Dental Association (2007). He is as an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fouchard Society, an honorary lifetime member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry and also the American Dental Association. He has published over 290 papers and book chapters.

Peter Rechmann, Prof. Dr. med. dent., DMD, PhD

Peter Rechmann, Prof. Dr. med. dent., DMD, PhD, started his career in 1980 as a faculty member in the Department of Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine at the Heinrich-Heine- University in Düsseldorf, Germany. Since 2001, he has been at the University of California at San Francisco, Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences, where he is currently a Professor in the Division of Prosthodontics as well as the Director of the Clinical Sciences Research Group. He has been a leader in clinical research for more than 30 years through conducting clinical trials in several areas of dentistry comprising oral surgery, periodontology, and caries prevention.
Dr.Rechmann’s clinical research for the last 15 years at UCSF has been in the field of caries preventive measures including the application of newly designed oral care products. He has also been involved in laboratory and clinical research dealing with lasers in dentistry for over 30 years. Recently, Dr. Rechmann conducts a prospective, randomized, blinded, controlled clinical CAMBRA trial (Caries Management By Risk Assessment) in a newly established Practice Based Research Network, which he created in cooperation with the California Dental Association Foundation. Up to 30 researcher dentists calibrated on the administration of a caries risk assessment and the treatment modalities recommended based on the caries risk assessment results (UCSF CAMBRA study), conduct a 2-year CAMBRA study in their dental offices.
